Destination brief
A guide to South Malé Atoll.
Separated from its northern neighbour only by the deep Vaadhoo Kandu, South Malé Atoll trades the bustle of the capital for a quieter, more considered rhythm — a compact ring of around thirty islands where most resorts sit within a forty-minute speedboat run of the airport. The atoll's personality is shaped by water moving through narrow channels between its reefs: at Guraidhoo Corner, an outer-reef drift in the south-east of a protected marine area, strong current draws grey reef sharks, eagle rays and schooling trevally onto the slope. Embudhoo Express, named for the speed of the flow through Emboodhu channel, is a classic pelagic dive where white-tip and grey reef sharks patrol at depth. Cocoa Thila and the Vaagali pinnacle serve as manta and eagle-ray cleaning stations during the south-west monsoon, while the Kuda Giri wreck — a cargo vessel sunk to create an artificial reef — now sits upright in around thirty metres of water, encrusted with sponges and soft corals and a favourite for relaxed wreck and night dives.
Above the surface, South Malé is also the closest of the central atolls to genuine surfable reef breaks. Spots such as Riptides off Guraidhoo and nearby peaks come alive from March to October when the south-west monsoon sends swell across the outer reef, giving the atoll a rare dual identity: reliable channel diving in the northeast monsoon and one of the Indian Ocean's better-known wave zones in the months that follow. The resort roster — COMO Cocoa Island, Anantara Dhigu, Taj Exotica, Naladhu Private Island — tends toward intimate, design-led properties rather than mega-resort estates.
The entire Guraidhoo channel, running between Guraidhoo Faru and Maadhoo Falhu, is a designated Protected Marine Area — its currents feed one of the most consistent grey-reef-shark and eagle-ray drifts in the central atolls.
