Maafushi

If local-island tourism in the Maldives has a birthplace, it is Maafushi. When the rules changed to allow guesthouses on inhabited islands, this strip of sand in South Malé Atoll — barely a thirty-minute speedboat from the airport — became the place that proved you could see the Maldives without a private-island budget. Today it is the busiest local island in the country: dozens of guesthouses, dive centres, beach cafés and water-sports shacks packed onto an island you can walk end to end in fifteen minutes.

That energy is the point. Maafushi is sociable and easy — a designated bikini beach where visitors swim freely, excursion boats leaving the jetty all morning, and a sense that whatever you want to do on the water, someone here will take you. It is the natural first stop for travellers who want the reef and the sandbanks without committing to one resort island.

And the water delivers. Offshore sandbanks like Furafathi draw snorkellers to schooling fish and bright coral; full-day boats run to the South Ari whale-shark grounds (best August–November); and on dark, plankton-rich nights the shallows light up with bioluminescence — the famous 'sea of stars'.
