At a glance

Before you go.

Mauritius offers lagoon beaches, mountain scenery and several distinct coastal bases. Grand Baie is a lively northern base, Belle Mare has long eastern beaches, Flic en Flac faces west, and Bel Ombre puts golf and nature close to a south-coast stay. Reef protection does not guarantee calm swimming: choose the beach for your month and ask the hotel about local wind, currents and swimming conditions.

When to go, entry and routing.

One island, four coasts

Le Morne, in the south-west, is the island’s defining image — a UNESCO-listed basalt monolith above a lagoon that draws kitesurfers and big-wave surfers through the southern winter. Inland, the Black River Gorges, the tea route and Port Louis’s market give the island a genuine second half beyond the beach.

Mauritius can suit a honeymoon, family holiday or longer stay; the right coast and hotel depend on your month and priorities. Arrive through SSR International Airport at Plaine Magnien and allow for the transfer to your chosen coast. If you want a second island, confirm the actual flight connections and entry requirements before fixing the route.

When is the best time to visit Mauritius?

June to September is generally cooler and drier; November to April is warmer and more humid, with May and October transition months. Your coast and the wind matter as well as the month. The official tropical cyclone season runs from November to mid-May, although storms can occur outside it. Check current forecasts and warnings before travel.

Which coast of Mauritius is best?

The north (Grand Baie) for choice, nightlife and boat trips; the east (Belle Mare) for long beaches and the classic large resorts; the west (Flic en Flac) for sunsets and calm swimming; the south-west (Le Morne) for kitesurfing and drama; the south (Bel Ombre) for quiet, golf and nature.

Can Mauritius be combined with another island?

A second island is possible when the flights, entry requirements and available nights fit. Ask our team to check the route to Réunion, Seychelles or the Maldives for your dates, including any connections. Allow a travel day where needed rather than treating an international leg as a quick hotel transfer.
