At a glance

Before you go.

Zanzibar’s beach choice starts with the coast and the tide. Nungwi and Kendwa are northern beach bases, with Kendwa known for less tidal retreat than much of the east coast. Around Matemwe, Pongwe, Michamvi, Paje and Jambiani, shallow reef flats can make beach access and swimming more tide-dependent. Choose the actual hotel shoreline as well as the village, and ask the hotel about local swimming conditions.

The Spice Islands

Stone Town adds history, carved doors and spice markets to a beach stay, while Pemba offers a separate island leg with reef diving and remote lodges. A Stone Town stop is optional, and reaching Pemba needs its own air or sea connection and onward transfer. Build those connections around your actual arrival and departure flights.

A mainland Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach stay can form one trip, but the park, airstrip, flight schedule and road transfers determine the route. Leave time for those connections rather than assuming every park has a direct flight. Before departure, check Tanzania’s passport-specific visa requirements and Zanzibar’s mandatory inbound travel insurance with the official providers.

Which coast of Zanzibar should I stay on?

Consider Nungwi or Kendwa for a northern beach base; Kendwa generally has less tidal retreat than much of the east coast. Paje and Jambiani suit a trip built around beach time and watersports, while Matemwe can be a base for Mnemba excursions. Ask your chosen hotel about its own shoreline, swimming access and the tide before deciding.

When is the best time to visit Zanzibar?

June to October and December to February are common beach-travel windows, but weather and sea conditions vary. Check the forecast, the tide and any seasonal hotel or excursion changes for your dates. A quieter travel month can work if your preferred property and activities are operating.

Can Zanzibar be combined with a safari?

Yes. Choose the safari park and beach hotel together, then confirm the appropriate airstrips, flights and road transfers. Some routes require a connection, and flight schedules need checking for your dates. Our team can build the sequence and confirm the available options.
