The resort
Chumbe Island Coral Park is a privately managed marine protected area 8 km west of Unguja, combining a coral reef sanctuary and forest reserve with a seven-bungalow eco-lodge that funds the conservation and education work. The reef was gazetted in 1994 as Tanzania's first MPA and the lodge opened in 1998, making it the world's first financially self-sustaining MPA. The off-grid bungalows run on photovoltaic solar power, harvest rainwater into 15,000-litre cisterns and use composting toilets and vegetative greywater filtration.
