About Emerson on Hurumzi
Four nineteenth-century buildings in the historic heart of Zanzibar's Stone Town, joined into one hotel around an 1860 palace that once housed the Sultan's Minister of Finance. Its first owner wanted the tallest rooftop in the city, and the view still takes in mosque minarets, the towers of the cathedral, the columns of the House of Wonders and the Indian Ocean beyond. American traveller Emerson Dewey Skeens brought the ruined buildings back to life from the late 1980s; the house now also holds an Emerson Foundation exhibition space, the Princess Salme Museum and a fashion workshop.
