The resort
andBeyond Mnemba Island is a private island lodge off the north-east coast of Zanzibar, ringed by reef and covered in casuarina forest. The island measures barely 1.5 km across and is shared by only a handful of guests and the andBeyond team, so the whole stay is built around a personal butler, meals taken wherever you choose and days shaped by the tide rather than a schedule. Twelve open-air Bandas sit directly behind the sand with no doors and no windows. Alongside the diving, snorkelling and dhow sailing, the lodge runs a coral nursery and reef restoration programme, monitors green turtle nests daily, and protects habitat for two rare antelope species, the Aders' duiker and the suni.

A beachside retreat for two, laid out in the soft spiral of a nautilus shell and set so close to the water that the waves become part of the room. There are no doors or windows, only sand between the Banda and the sea, plus a private stretch of shoreline with a daybed, loungers and an outdoor shower. Eleven of the twelve Bandas are this type.
