Stingrays at the jetty
Daily, almost guaranteed: large stingrays glide into the shallows by the harbour — watch from the beach in ankle-deep water.
The island
Fulidhoo is small even by Maldivian standards — roughly seven hundred metres long, two hundred wide, with about two hundred residents and a single sandy main street. You can walk the whole island in ten minutes. What it lacks in size it makes up for at the water's edge, where the marine life comes astonishingly close.
Locals call it Stingray Island, and for good reason: as boats approach, the engine noise draws large stingrays into the shallows by the jetty, where you can watch them from ankle-deep water. The real headliners, though, are the nurse sharks — at the nearby Shark Point in Vaavu Atoll, snorkellers and divers find themselves inside a slow-motion swirl of them, the scene behind half the shark reels you've seen online.
Evenings belong to bodu beru — the big-drum rhythm and dance that Fulidhoo has kept alive better than almost anywhere. It adds up to a rare thing: a tiny, genuine island community with world-class shark encounters a few minutes offshore.
