Whale-shark safari
South Ari's signature: a boat out to the year-round aggregation zone for a chance to snorkel beside whale sharks.
The island
Dhigurah means 'long island', and it earns the name: a slender three-kilometre spine of jungle and sand in South Ari Atoll, tapering at its southern end into the powder-white Long Beach sandbank. You can walk, cycle or rickshaw the length of it, and at the far tip find shallow turquoise water and, often, almost no one.
But what makes Dhigurah extraordinary is offshore. South Ari is widely regarded as the only place on the planet where whale sharks aggregate year-round — so unlike almost anywhere else, there's a real chance of swimming alongside the world's largest fish whatever month you visit. It has turned a quiet local island into one of the Maldives' great marine-life basecamps.
Beneath the surface the atoll keeps delivering: manta cleaning stations, reef sharks and some of the country's most celebrated dive sites within boat reach. Above it, Dhigurah stays refreshingly low-key — a handful of guesthouses, a long empty beach, and the daily ritual of heading out to look for giants.
What to do
South Ari's signature: a boat out to the year-round aggregation zone for a chance to snorkel beside whale sharks.
The 3 km island ends in a glorious sandbank — go mid-morning for empty white sand and shallow, glassy water.
Seasonal manta cleaning stations plus famed dives at Kuda Rah Thila and Reethi Thila — a world-class neighbourhood.
Healthy coral and reef fish a short swim or boat-drop from shore, with turtles a regular sighting.
Private sandbank picnics in the lagoon and dusk cruises that frequently find spinner dolphins.
Beneath the surface
The protected stretch of reef where whale sharks cruise year-round — most encounters are by snorkel, on the surface.
A protected, technicolour pinnacle of soft coral, overhangs and reef fish — one of South Ari's classic dives.
Seasonal manta cleaning stations and a coral-rich thila teeming with schooling fish and reef sharks.
