Destination brief
A guide to Noonu Atoll.
Noonu Atoll occupies the southern lobe of the natural Miladhunmadulu formation, 150-180 kilometres north of Male, and is one of the most exclusive resort regions in the Maldives. Its lagoon holds what marine researchers describe as the highest density of schooling reef fish in the country, with fusiliers, bluestripe snapper and bigeye jack forming curtains of movement at sites like Orimas Thila, where grey reef sharks hunt in populations of 20 or more individuals per dive. Green sea turtle nesting has been documented across the atoll's uninhabited islands, with Medhufaru recording the single largest clutch count in a 2018-2024 study. Spinner dolphin mega-pods are a regular sight on calm mornings.
The resort roster is short and deliberately high-end: Cheval Blanc Randheli (LVMH), Soneva Jani, Velaa Private Island, Noku Maldives (IHG Vignette Collection since December 2024), Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, Siyam World and Robinson Club Noonu. Access flipped in 2019 when Maafaru International Airport opened with a 2,200-metre runway capable of handling narrow- and wide-body aircraft; the airport has since become the country's second private-jet hub, recording 804 private movements in 2025 (up 38 percent year-on-year) and cutting transfer times for northern-atoll guests to a 45-minute domestic flight plus short speedboat. The atoll suits travellers who want an ultra-private resort, short transfers by northern-atoll standards, and enough dive calibre to keep experienced guests occupied for a week without repeating sites.
Soneva Jani's signature overwater villas feature a retractable roof over the master bedroom that opens at the push of a button to reveal the sky above the lagoon, and a curved timber slide from the upper deck that drops guests straight into the Indian Ocean.
