A guide to South Ari Atoll.
South Ari Atoll, administratively Alif Dhaal, is the Maldivian atoll most intimately associated with the whale shark. The forty-plus-kilometre-long South Ari Marine Protected Area, gazetted in 2009 and anchored on the reef running past Maamigili and Dhigurah, is one of only two sites in the world where Rhincodon typus is reliably encountered throughout the year, with the largest aggregations coinciding with coral-spawning full moons in the north-east monsoon. Reached in around twenty-five to forty minutes by seaplane from Velana, or via a domestic flight into Maamigili's small regional airport, the atoll combines this singular marine draw with dive sites of genuine range.
Kudarah Thila, a small marine-protected pinnacle in the south-east of the atoll, is a classic manta cleaning station where four coral heads rise from about forty metres to roughly twelve; Maamigili Beyru and Dhigurah Beyru, the long outer reefs off the two southern islands, are the principal whale-shark snorkelling drifts, and the wider protected area hosts hawksbill turtles, resident eagle rays and reef sharks. Visibility regularly exceeds thirty metres in the dry season, making the November-to-April window the quieter one for underwater photography even though whale-shark encounters continue year-round. Above the water, the atoll has become home to some of the best-known luxury estates in the country: Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, whose Ithaa restaurant sits five metres beneath the lagoon, LUX* South Ari Atoll on Dhidhoofinolhu, Lily Beach on Huvahendhoo, and the Diamonds, Constance and Centara properties that cluster around the atoll's deeper channels.
The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is home to Ithaa, opened in 2005 and designed as the world's first all-glass undersea restaurant — its acrylic dome sits five metres below the lagoon and seats just fourteen guests per service.
