There isn't a single fixed answer — the title moves between a handful of ultra-exclusive properties depending on the villa and season. The usual contenders are the private-island residences and signature villas: Velaa Private Island, Cheval Blanc Randheli, the Ithaafushi private-island residence at Waldorf Astoria, the underwater residence at Conrad Rangali, Soneva's largest villas, and One&Only Reethi Rah. At the very top, a private-island buyout or a multi-bedroom residence can run into tens of thousands of dollars per night. Because rates vary enormously by villa, season and inclusions — and because we hold direct-contracted rates below public — we quote exact pricing on request rather than publish it.

Entry to this tier typically starts well above other Maldives resorts, and the headline residences (multi-bedroom overwater or private-island villas with a dedicated chef, butler and speedboat) sit among the most expensive hotel accommodations in the world. Most of the resorts on this page occupy their own island — that single-resort-island exclusivity is a large part of what defines the tier. A few go further with a fully private island-within-the-resort (such as Waldorf Astoria's Ithaafushi) that can be booked as an exclusive-use buyout with its own staff, pools and beaches.
