The island
Rasdhoo is the administrative capital of North Ari and one of the great diving local islands of the Maldives. It sits on the rim of its own small atoll — a ring that also holds the uninhabited islands of Madivaru and Veligandu — which is exactly why divers travel here from across the world.
The signature is the dawn patrol: a pre-sunrise boat to Madivaru's outer wall, where scalloped hammerhead sharks cruise the blue before the day warms up. It's one of the most reliable hammerhead encounters in the country, backed up by manta rays, grey reef sharks and dramatic drop-offs all within a short ride.
Yet Rasdhoo works just as well above the water. There's a proper bikini beach, strong snorkelling straight off the shore, and a cluster of easygoing cafés. Best of all, cheap inter-island ferries make it a natural base for island-hopping — Thoddoo, Ukulhas, Mathiveri and Feridhoo are all a short, dollar-or-two boat ride away.
