The turtle house reef
Walk in straight off Bikini Beach to a healthy reef edge in 5–15 m of water — resident green turtles, reef fish and 20–30 m visibility at its December–April best.
The island
Most Maldivian islands live off the sea. Thoddoo lives off the land. Set on the northern rim of Ari Atoll, about 67 kilometres and a ninety-minute speedboat ride west of Malé, it is the agricultural heart of the country — the source of roughly four out of every five watermelons the Maldives eats, alongside fields of papaya, banana, cucumber and tropical herbs. Cycle ten minutes inland from the beach and the turquoise gives way to something you see almost nowhere else in the archipelago: green, cultivated, fragrant farmland.
It makes Thoddoo feel different from the moment you step off the boat. The pace is unhurried and genuinely local; the produce on your plate was likely picked that morning. Two dedicated 'bikini beaches' sit at opposite ends of the island, screened from the residential village so visitors can swim and sunbathe freely — and from the powder-white sand of the eastern shore you can wade straight onto a house reef where green turtles graze in 20–30 metres of visibility.
Offshore, Thoddoo plugs into one of the planet's great dive neighbourhoods. The legendary thilas of Ari — Maaya Thila and Fish Head among them — pull in grey reef sharks and night-diving spectacle, seasonal manta cleaning stations spin up in the southwest monsoon, and full-day safaris run south to the Ari whale-shark grounds. It is, in short, a working farming island wrapped in a world-class reef: barefoot, authentic and quietly extraordinary.

Two visitor beaches at opposite ends of the island, both an easy cycle from the guesthouses — soft sand, shallow lagoon and uninterrupted sunset lines.
The thing that makes Thoddoo, Thoddoo. Wander the inland plots of melon, papaya and banana — the rare Maldivian island where the interior is as memorable as the shore.
Two of Ari Atoll's most famous pinnacles within boat reach — grey reef sharks, schooling fish and one of the country's best-loved night dives.
A full-day boat south to the Ari Atoll feeding grounds in search of whale sharks — the Maldives' gentle giants — with manta cleaning stations en route in season.
Half-day classics: a private picnic on a bare sandbank in the lagoon, and dusk cruises that regularly pick up pods of spinner dolphins.
Beneath the surface
Walk-in snorkelling and shore dives straight off the eastern shore — a healthy reef edge at 5–15 m with resident green turtles and 20–30 m visibility at its dry-season best.
One of Ari Atoll's most celebrated pinnacles within boat reach — grey reef and white-tip sharks by day, and a famous after-dark hunt on the night dive.
A protected marine area where schooling grey reef sharks, fusiliers and Napoleon wrasse hang in the current around a coral-clad pinnacle.
