There isn't a single fixed answer. The title moves between a handful of ultra-exclusive properties depending on the villa and season. The usual contenders are the private-island residences and signature villas: Velaa Private Island, Cheval Blanc Randheli, the Ithaafushi private-island residence at Waldorf Astoria, the underwater residence at Conrad Rangali, Soneva's largest villas, and One&Only Reethi Rah. At the very top, a private-island buyout or a multi-bedroom residence can run into tens of thousands of dollars per night. Rates vary enormously by villa, season and inclusions, and we hold direct-contracted rates below public, so we quote exact pricing on request rather than publish it.

Entry to this tier typically starts well above other Maldives resorts, and the headline residences (multi-bedroom overwater or private-island villas with a dedicated chef, butler and speedboat) sit among the most expensive hotel accommodations in the world. Most of the resorts on this page occupy their own island, and that single-resort-island exclusivity is a large part of what defines the tier. A few go further with a fully private island-within-the-resort (such as Waldorf Astoria's Ithaafushi) that can be booked as an exclusive-use buyout with its own staff, pools and beaches.
