Sri Lanka planning guide

Sri Lanka itinerary: how to spend 5, 7, 10 or 14 days.

A useful Sri Lanka itinerary starts with nights rather than a list of attractions. Decide how much time you want in each setting, allow for travel between bases and give the final day to your departure.

Planning information reviewed .

Compare the four routes

These planning examples use five days and four nights, seven days and six nights, ten days and nine nights, or fourteen days and thirteen nights. They assume your arrival and departure fit those day counts. A late arrival, early flight or additional airport night changes the allocation. Treat each transfer as part of the holiday, with time to check out, travel and settle into the next hotel.

Suggested overnight allocations for four Sri Lanka itinerary lengths
LengthSuggested overnight allocationBest suited to
5 days / 4 nightsArrival base 1; one coastal base 3A short visit focused on one setting
7 days / 6 nightsArrival base 1; Sigiriya area 2; one coastal base 3A focused culture-and-coast introduction
10 days / 9 nightsArrival base 1; Sigiriya area 2; Kandy 1; Ella 2; one coastal base 3A first journey through culture, hills and coast
14 days / 13 nightsArrival base 1; Sigiriya area 3; Kandy 2; Ella 3; one coastal base 4A slower version with more time in each setting

Choose Colombo or Negombo for the arrival base according to your flight and interests. Select the coast for the season and the route. These examples do not require a different beach hotel each night.

For any route, an early departure or a long journey from the final hotel may call for an airport-area night. Move a night from the coastal allocation when needed, keeping the stated total unchanged. The east-coast example below already includes this departure base.

A 5-day Sri Lanka itinerary: choose one focus

With four nights, keep the trip focused. Spend the arrival night in Colombo or Negombo, then give three nights to one coastal base that fits your dates and departure plan. Day 2 includes the journey to the hotel; days 3 and 4 leave room for the setting and one outing; day 5 is for departure.

For a southwest beach visit, begin by comparing Bentota and Beruwala. Confirm the route before choosing a more distant coast. If an early flight needs a final airport-area night, reduce the coast to two nights and move the fourth night closer to departure.

If culture matters more than the beach, an alternative is arrival 1 night, Sigiriya area 2 and departure base 1. That is also four nights. Save the hills and a separate beach stay for a longer visit, rather than spending most of five days changing hotels.

A 7-day Sri Lanka itinerary: culture and one coast

Day 1: arrive and settle in. Keep the first evening simple. If the flight leaves you with little usable time, make rest the plan rather than adding an excursion.

Days 2–3: stay in the Sigiriya area. Use one base for the inland part of the trip. Sigiriya’s rock-top palace remains and gardens give this section a clear focus; read the official attraction overview alongside our Sigiriya guide. Choose additional visits according to your interests instead of trying to fit every cultural site into two days.

Days 4–6: move to one coastal base. Day 4 includes the transfer. Leave the remaining days for the beach setting, the hotel and an outing you actually want to do. Compare Bentota or the Galle area for a southwest route, or consider Pasikudah for an east-coast version.

Day 7: depart. Confirm that the journey from the selected beach hotel fits your flight. If it requires an airport-area night, move one of the three coastal nights to the end of the trip.

A 10-day Sri Lanka itinerary: add the hills

Keep the arrival night and two nights in the Sigiriya area, then continue to Kandy for one night. With one night, choose a limited plan: arrival and one main interest, rather than a full day’s programme layered onto a transfer.

Spend the next two nights in Ella. Its hill and tea-country setting adds a distinct part of the journey. The surrounding landscape and cooler climate are described by Sri Lanka Tourism. Use the full day between arrival and departure for your main outing.

Finish with three nights at one coastal base. For travellers who enjoy town exploration, Galle Fort offers historic streets and architecture; a fort-area stay and a beach stay have different settings. Read the official Galle Fort overview and compare the Galle and Unawatuna guides before deciding where to sleep.

This version already has five overnight bases. Add another stop by replacing part of the route, or extend the trip so the extra experience has enough time.

A 14-day Sri Lanka itinerary: give each place more time

Use the additional four nights to deepen the ten-day route: three nights in the Sigiriya area, two in Kandy, three in Ella and four on the coast, alongside the arrival night. The result is thirteen nights across five bases.

The extra time is useful for couples who want quieter afternoons, families who need a gentler pace and visitors who prefer to explore from one hotel. It also allows a longer visit or an additional activity without making every day a travel day. Select the activity first, then check where it fits geographically and whether it changes the overnight plan.

Adjust the route for the east coast

Sri Lanka Tourism describes the east coast as an alternative during the southwest monsoon. For a beach-focused trip in that period, start with Pasikudah or Trincomalee and work backwards to the touring section. Official beach guidance.

An east-coast hotel is not a simple substitute in every southern route. For ten days, consider arrival 1 night, Sigiriya area 3, east coast 4 and departure base 1: nine nights, with the hills saved for another trip. This is an alternative for a more focused holiday; confirm the actual connections and travel time before finalising hotel nights.

Plan road and rail around the route

If a hill-country train journey is important to you, check the exact service and seat availability before fixing hotel nights. Use the official railway reservation service and keep a road alternative in the plan. A proposed itinerary does not establish that a particular train is operating or has seats available.

Questions before you book

How many places should I include in five days?

Choose one main setting after the arrival night. Four nights can support a focused coastal stay, or an arrival night, two nights around Sigiriya and a departure-base night. A full culture, hills and coast circuit would give too much of this short trip to changing bases.

Does a seven-day itinerary mean seven hotel nights?

The examples here count seven days as six nights, ten days as nine nights and fourteen days as thirteen nights. Your flights determine the usable time. A late arrival, early departure or extra airport night changes the allocation.

Can I replace the south coast with the east coast?

Choose the east coast with the season and the touring route in mind. It is not a simple hotel swap in every southern circuit. A focused ten-day option is arrival 1 night, Sigiriya area 3, east coast 4 and departure base 1, with the hills saved for another trip.

Is the hill-country train included in these routes?

These are route-planning examples. Check the exact train service and seat availability before fixing hotel nights, and keep a road alternative. The itinerary does not establish that a particular train is operating or has seats available.

Turn your route into a clear travel brief

Share your travel dates, number of nights, arrival and departure plans, travellers and children’s ages, budget currency, preferred pace and the experiences that matter most. Specify whether beach time, hills or cultural touring comes first, and include any hotel names you already like.
