Give Kandy a full city day rather than reducing it to a railway connection. The Temple of the Tooth and the historic city are part of a UNESCO-listed site; dress and behave respectfully at active religious places.
UNESCO's Sacred City of Kandy centres on a living religious setting. That gives the visit a different character from the ruins of the Cultural Triangle: it calls for care, context and time among a present-day city. Kandy is also a useful point to slow down before entering the higher tea country.
