Why go to Trincomalee?
Trincomalee rewards a split itinerary: spend time in town, then choose a beach base around Nilaveli or Uppuveli. Do not treat those beaches as the city centre.
This is a city with harbour and religious history, not simply a label for every northeastern beach. Koneswaram and the fort give the town a distinct visit; Nilaveli and Pigeon Island sit further along the coast. Decide whether your priority is town, beach or marine life before choosing where to stay.
