Travelling as a family or a group of friends is easier when everyone stays under one roof. Of the 191 Maldives resorts in our directory, 95 list a villa with two or more bedrooms, and a handful offer residences that sleep 12 or more. The key is to read the sleeping limit and the layout, not just the bedroom count.

Two bedrooms is the usual starting point

Most multi-bedroom villas have two bedrooms. The numbers below come from the villa details we hold and show what to expect:

  • Alila Kothaifaru (Raa Atoll): Two-Bedroom Beach Pool Villa, 265 m², sleeps 6.
  • Anantara Dhigu (South Malé Atoll): Two Bedroom Anantara Beach Pool Villa, 321 m², sleeps 6; Two Bedroom Family Beach Pool Villa, 237 m², sleeps 5.
  • Atmosphere Kanifushi (Lhaviyani Atoll): 2 Bedroom Sunset Family Beach Villa, 213 m², sleeps 6.
  • Avani+ Fares (Baa Atoll): Two Bedroom Beachfront Pavilion, sleeps 6.
Notice that "two bedrooms" does not always mean the same sleeping limit. Five and six are both common, and the difference often reflects how extra beds are counted. Always ask who counts towards the limit.

When the group is bigger

A few resorts list larger residences. Anantara Kihavah in Baa Atoll, for example, lists a Three Bedroom Beach Pool Residence sleeping 12 and a Four Bedroom Beach Pool Residence sleeping 14. Avani+ Fares lists a Four Bedroom Beach Pavilion sleeping 12. These suit multi-generational trips, weddings and friends travelling together.

What to check for a group

1. The sleeping limit and who counts. Adults, teenagers and children are often counted differently. 2. The bed types. Twin, king and sofa beds change how a group splits up. 3. Bathrooms. Ask how many bathrooms the villa has and where they are. 4. Pool and outdoor space. Many two-bedroom villas come with a private pool; see our guide to Maldives private pool villas. 5. The meal plan for children. Child policies differ by age and resort, so confirm them in writing. 6. The transfer. Seaplanes have baggage limits, so check them early; read our guide to Maldives transfers.

Families with young children

If you are travelling with children, also read our family guide to the Maldives. It covers kids' clubs, ages and how to pick the right resort.

Booking tip

State the full villa category name, the exact number of adults and the ages of the children on the first request. That allows the resort to confirm the right room and the real occupancy, rather than a category that only looks similar.
