Maldives Transfers Explained: Speedboat, Seaplane, and Domestic Flights
Getting from Velana International Airport to your resort is a journey in itself. Here is how each transfer type works, what they cost, and which one is right for you.
The Journey Does Not End at the Airport
Landing in Malé is just the beginning. Every resort in the Maldives is on its own island, which means a second journey — by speedboat, seaplane, or domestic flight — is always required. Understanding your transfer options is essential to planning a smooth trip.
Speedboat Transfers
Best for: Resorts in North Male Atoll, South Male Atoll, and nearby atolls.
Duration: 15 minutes to 2 hours depending on distance.
Cost: Typically USD 150–400 per person return.
Key advantage: Available 24/7, including late night arrivals. No waiting.
Speedboat transfers are weather-dependent in rough seas, but generally reliable. Most resorts operate their own fleet, and you are met at the airport jetty by resort staff.
Seaplane Transfers
Best for: Mid-distance resorts in Baa Atoll, Lhaviyani Atoll, Ari Atoll, and similar.
Duration: 25–60 minutes flight time, but allow 2–3 hours total including check-in and waiting.
Cost: USD 400–700 per person return.
Key advantage: A spectacular aerial experience — you fly over atolls, islands, and lagoons at low altitude. It is genuinely one of the highlights of the trip.
Important limitations: Seaplanes only operate during daylight hours (roughly 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM). If your international flight lands after 3:00 PM, you will likely need an overnight stay near the airport. This is normal and expected — most resorts can arrange accommodation for you.
Domestic Flights
Best for: Far-flung resorts in Addu Atoll, Laamu Atoll, Haa Alifu Atoll, and the deep south.
Duration: 60–90 minutes flight time, followed by a short speedboat ride.
Cost: USD 400–600 per person return.
Key advantage: Reaches atolls that seaplanes cannot, with scheduled departure times.
Domestic flights operate from Velana International Airport to regional airports like Gan (Addu), Kadhdhoo (Laamu), and Hanimaadhoo (Haa Dhaalu). From the regional airport, a speedboat takes you the last stretch to the resort.
Which Transfer Should You Choose?
The honest answer: the transfer type is determined by the resort location, not personal preference. When you choose a resort, the transfer is dictated by geography.
However, if you are specifically looking for a seaplane experience (many first-time visitors are), filter your resort search to atolls that require seaplane transfers. Your travel consultant can help with this.
Pro Tips
1. Always share your flight details with the resort at least 48 hours before arrival. Transfers are scheduled based on your landing time. 2. Pack light for seaplanes. Luggage allowance is typically 20–25 kg per person. 3. Bring a camera. The seaplane views are extraordinary — sit on the left side for the best aerial island shots. 4. Budget for transfers separately. They are rarely included in room rates and can add USD 500–1,400 per couple to the total cost.
