Two animals top the wish list of almost every snorkeller who books the Maldives: manta rays and whale sharks. Baa Atoll is best known for mantas, South Ari Atoll for whale sharks. In our directory, 57 resorts list manta ray dives or snorkel trips and 17 list whale shark encounters, but sightings are never guaranteed.

Manta rays: Baa Atoll and beyond

Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and its Hanifaru Bay is famous for gatherings of feeding manta rays. These are usually linked to the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November. Access to the bay is managed to protect the animals, so visits are limited and rules can change. Your resort or excursion operator will tell you what applies in your dates.

Resorts in Baa Atoll whose dive centres list manta encounters include:

Baa Atoll is not the only option. Dive centres at resorts in North Malé, Lhaviyani, Raa and Ari atolls also list manta dives, usually at cleaning stations on the reef where mantas come to be groomed by small fish.

Whale sharks: South Ari Atoll

South Ari Atoll is where most visitors look for whale sharks, and sightings are possible throughout the year. Resorts there whose dive centres list whale shark encounters include:

North Ari Atoll also has several, such as Gangehi, Safari Island, Sandies Bathala, Veligandu and W Maldives. If whale sharks are the priority, choose an atoll first and a resort second.

How to plan it

  • Base yourself in the right atoll. A resort in the same atoll as the site means shorter boat trips.
  • Check the season. Mantas and whale sharks both move with the plankton.
  • Choose snorkel or dive. Some sites are snorkel-only. A certified diver can reach more places, but the best-known manta gathering is enjoyed from the surface.
  • Ask what the dive centre offers. Some run dedicated excursions; others go only when sightings are reported. For a wider view of diving, see our top 10 Maldives dive sites.
  • Keep expectations honest. These are wild animals. Good operators say "possible", not "guaranteed".

Respect the animals

Keep your distance, never touch or chase an animal, and follow your guide. Reef-safe sun protection and no contact with the coral help the reef that feeds the animals you came to see. More on responsible travel in our guide to sustainable travel in the Maldives.
