Addu City will host the inaugural Burunu Lite sport fishing tournament on May 28, 2026, in Maradhoo. Organized by the Visit Maldives Corporation and the Equatorial Fishing Club, the event features 24 teams competing for a top prize of MVR 35,000, with additional awards for runners-up and the tournament’s most successful angler. The competition operates under international IGFA standards, utilizing a mix of catch-and-release protocols and regulated retention, with proceeds from sold catches supporting local charities.
This regional expansion of the flagship BurunuBoma series aims to stimulate local economies and promote community engagement across the southern atolls. By bringing professional-style fishing events directly to island residents, the initiative seeks to highlight traditional Maldivian marine culture while boosting tourism for local guesthouses and small businesses. Following this event, organizers plan to extend the Burunu Lite format to other regions, while concurrently preparing for the next international BurunuBoma tournament scheduled for later this year.
