Sri Lanka planning guide
Sri Lanka and Maldives: touring first, island time after.
A Sri Lanka and Maldives trip combines time exploring one island with time staying on another. Begin with the total hotel nights, protect the flight connection between countries and choose one Maldives resort that suits how you want to finish.

Compare two clear overnight allocations
These are planning examples, with hotel nights counted separately from calendar days. Both place the Sri Lanka section first and finish at one Maldives resort. International flight times may require an additional travel day, and any necessary airport night must be included in the agreed allocation.
| Trip length | Sri Lanka / Maldives split | Suggested pace |
|---|---|---|
| 10 nights | Sri Lanka 6 + Maldives 4 | A focused cultural visit followed by one island stay |
| 14 nights | Sri Lanka 8 + Maldives 6 | More time at each Sri Lanka base and a longer resort finish |
See where every night goes
The ten-night version keeps Sri Lanka to three bases: an arrival night, three nights around Sigiriya and two in Colombo before the onward flight. It gives the cultural section two full intervening days and avoids adding a distant coast when island time is already planned.
The fourteen-night version adds three nights in Kandy, alongside an arrival night, three around Sigiriya and a final Negombo night. That makes eight Sri Lanka nights before six at one Maldives resort. These are route choices to discuss; hotel availability and the exact flight timing still need confirmation.

Coordinate the flight and the final resort transfer
SriLankan Airlines lists Malé–Colombo travel on its official site, supporting the route as an option to investigate. Confirm the actual Colombo–Malé service, operating date, baggage allowance and ticket conditions for your journey. This guide does not promise a daily departure or a specific connection.
Choose the Maldives transfer alongside the resort. Ask the team to confirm whether your arrival and departure flights fit the island’s transfer arrangements, including any seaplane or domestic connection. Leave a clear plan for a delayed incoming flight or a connection that requires an airport-area stay.
Choose what the Sri Lanka section should contribute
If history and cultural visits matter most, the Sigiriya and Kandy choices give the tour a clear purpose. Use the existing city guides to compare the stays and visits before adding another stop. More available nights can deepen the same route instead of creating a faster circuit.
If the hills or wildlife are your main interest, replace part of the Sri Lanka allocation with a suitable base and verify the connections. Keep the country totals unchanged. Adding a safari or another beach hotel simply because it is nearby on a map can make the trip less relaxed.
Choose the Maldives stay by room, meals and transfer
Decide whether you want a beach villa, an overwater category or another room arrangement, then compare the meal plan and activities you expect to use. For families, ask about the exact age rules and sleeping arrangements; for a honeymoon, explain the privacy and dining experience you want.
Request a proposal that identifies every hotel night, the inter-country flight, return island transfers and confirmed inclusions. Rates and flight availability belong to your dated quotation. The Sri Lanka beach season and a Maldives resort stay also need separate weather consideration; one seasonal label does not cover both countries.
Questions before you book
Can I travel in the opposite order?
Yes. Compare the flight timetable and the routing from your home airport before choosing the order. The examples here finish in the Maldives; reversing them also changes which hotel should hold the arrival or departure buffer.
Does a fourteen-night holiday mean fourteen days?
No. Fourteen nights means fourteen hotel nights in these examples. Flight times, overnight flights and the connection between countries determine the total calendar days and usable time.

Turn your route into a clear travel brief
Share your travel dates, number of nights, arrival and departure plans, travellers and children’s ages, budget currency, preferred pace and the experiences that matter most. Specify whether beach time, hills or cultural touring comes first, and include any hotel names you already like.
Explore the Sri Lanka destination hub to connect those choices with the existing city guides and hotel pages. Ask our team to confirm the current stays, routing, rates and availability for your dates.
