It drives deep and taut. Pinot noir is a strong core and the chardonnay sits at the edge offering lemon and white nectarine sorbet flavors. Staggeringly concentrated, yet the balance makes it seem airy and light. Acidity is perfectly positioned, and the power is intense and long. This is an ultra precise Cristal, finishing with a mere suggestion of savoriness and warmth to come. Impressive on release, this will be at its best drinking from 2025.

Cote de Beaune, FranceBright, pale yellow. Tight aromas of mirabelle, crushed herbs, licorice and powdered stone are complicated by a distinctive oyster shell quality and a hint of orange zest. Yamanashi,Japan Compared with those grown on conventional pergolas, Koshu from the Misawa Vineyard has smaller berries, higher sugar content (about 20%), and different organic acids composition. In fact, after spending several years looking into its composition, it became clear that Koshu from the Misawa Vineyard contained higher quantities of malic acid than those grown elsewhere.They also practice “massal selection”, which gives us vines that produce higher sugar content, smaller bunches and smaller berries from the winemaker’s perspective. Instead of relying on fermentation techniques, we want to express the characteristic “sense of place” of the Misawa Vineyard.

The palate is deliciously concentrated and tropical, underpinned by nectarine and blossoms. Saline notes bring structure, while passionfruit and vibrant citrus acidity bring balance. The compelling finish encourages you to take another sip, and then another. It also hints at the rewards of keeping a bottle aside for a future date.

Stellenbosch, South Africa The Intellego Chenin Blanc is the very first wine that was made under the Intellego label and these grapes are from a vineyard in the South of the Swartland. The label is a picture I took of an abandoned workers house next to the vineyard. These workers contribute massively to the vineyards and work been done there.Whole bunch pressed and fermented on the gross lees in old 500L barrels.Racked before bottling and a small part of sulphur added before being bottled.The wine sits on the lees for 11 months and no batonage done.

This sensational effort came in at 12.7% natural alcohol, it is made in the style of one of this estates great classics, the 1959. Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color to the rim along with a luxurious bouquet of cedarwood, lead pencil shaving, white chocolate, cocoa and cassis. Fat, rich, opulent and full-bodied with low acidity and stunning seductiveness and complexity, this noble wine possesses a bountiful, generous, heady style. It is just coming into its plateau of maturity where it should hold for 20-25 years.

Pauillac, France Intense aromas of blackberries, black licorice and currants, with mineral undertones. Full-bodied, with a solid core of tannins and a long, silky finish. Still holding back, but is concentrated and powerful.

Pauillac, France A classic Lafite Rothschild, with a good 40 years of potential aging ahead of it, this wine tastes like a juiced-up 1999. A blend of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13.5% Merlot (only 43% of the crop was deemed worthy enough for this wine), the 2001 shows the classic Lafite nose of lead pencil shavings (graphite), plum, cherry, and black currant, with a hint of tobacco leaf, cedar, and spice box. Medium-bodied, with loads of tannin, this intensely concentrated Lafite is somehow restrained, with extraordinary precision and purity. It is a beauty and seems to be putting on a bit of weight.

Pauillac, France The 1998 Latour was in fact the first vintage I ever tasted en primeur at the château. It was an early vintage after budburst on 20 March and the picking began on 20 September until 5 October, the Grand Vin a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot (compared to around 9% these days), 4% Cabernet Franc 1% Petit Verdot. It has an open-knit bouquet with notes of black fruit, iron, undergrowth and autumn leaves. You cannot help noticing its rusticity compared to present-day Latour. The palate is medium-bodied, well balanced, a tang of soy marking the entry, brambly red berry fruit and an almost Graves-like, tertiary, slightly short finish. It is a mid-weight Latour, one that I cannot envisage improving further but it will cruise at this level for the next decade. Tasted at the château.

Saint-Estèphe, France Château Calon-Séguris an estate located in the commune ofSaint-Estèpheon the left bank of the Gironde River in Bordeaux, which was rated as a third growth in the1855 Classificationof the Medoc and Graves. The château is unique in the Medoc as the vineyards are in one single plot surrounded by tall stone walls. The grand vin is predominantly made fromCabernet Sauvignon– in some years the proportion can be as high as 90 percent.Wine growing here dates back to the 12th Century, but the name, Calon-Ségur, was first seen in the 18th Century. At the time, the château was owned by Nicolas-Alexandre, the Marquis de Ségur, who also owned Châteaux Latour, Lafite and Margaux. The Marquis decided to add his name to the château alongside the word Calon, the name of the small boats that once transferred timber down the Gironde. As well as changing the name of the estate he also placed a heart on the label of his wine, after he famously stated: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart belongs to Calon."

Made in a structured, medium to full-bodied style with superb concentration, beautiful purity, and admirable symmetry, this beauty is one of the strongest efforts of the vintage.

Saint-Julien, France The 4th Grand Cru in the 1855 classification, Château Beychevelle would undoubtedly deserve another title if the classification were to be redone. With no less than 70 ha on the famous Médoc appellation, Saint-Julien, it has become a must. The blend is composed of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. A very rigorous selection is made in the vineyards and in the cellar to preserve only the best fruits. The wine is fine and balanced, rich in tannins and the aromas of fruit and spices are of a charming finesse. With a good structure, these wines are suitable for a long aging. Many amateurs, French and foreign, are looking for old vintages, particularly successful.As for recent years, they are acclaimed by a global clientele, and especially Asian. It will go perfectly with red meats but not only... do not hesitate to let your imagination run wild.

Medoc, France 2012 Potensac it has developed more flesh to counterbalance those prenatal hard tannins. It has an attractive if unspectacular raspberry, strawberry and tobacco-scented bouquet, quite closed at first, opaque, but opening with several minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe blackberry fruit laced with tobacco and sea salt. I appreciate the finish here. There is satisfying substance, a gentle grip and a classic pencil lead, almost Pauillac-like finish. Enjoy this upstanding Médoc from Jean-Hubert Delon over the next 10-12 years

Saint-Emilion The 1998 Cheval Blanc, a blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, is deep garnet-brick in color and absolutely explodes with scents of exotic spices, incense, dried roses, cigar box and licorice, with a core of crème de cassis and dried cherries plus touches of black tea and dusty earth. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the mouth with rich, plushly textured fruit and then POW—it hits the mid-palate with an explosion of Chinese five spice and floral perfume sparks, leading to an epically long finish. This cannot fail to impress and can easily cellar for another 30 years or more.

Saint-Emilion After a lovely summer, harvesting took place in September, when the weather was a little unreliable. The high grape quality helped to make a keeping wine with very classical characteristics. With its intense black robe, the wine displays black fruit aromas combined with hints of cocoa. The mid-palate is distinctively lush and dense. The finish is multi-layered and firm, and contributes a lot of freshness and length to this very characteristic Saint-Emilion vintage

Pomerol Proprietor Christian Moueix's 1996s have turned out well in the bottle. The 1996 Petrus is a big, monolithic, foursquare wine with an impressively opaque purple color, and sweet berry fruit intermixed with earth, pain grille, and coffee scents. Full-bodied and muscular, with high levels of tannin, and a backward style, this wine (less than 50% of the production was bottled as Petrus) will require patience. It is a mammoth example

Pomerol, France This wine has been produced by Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix since 1976 for the Borderie family, owners since 1930.The Merlot vines (averaging 30 years of age), are planted on gravel and clay. The Cabernet Franc is planted on silt soils, which encourage a nuanced and full expression of this varietal’s character. The vineyard management and vinification are carried out traditionally and with great care, producing a plump, supple, fleshy wine with ripe fruit and silky tannins. Eminently approachable, even in its youth, Lafleur-Gazin is a delightful expression of the lighter style of Pomerol wines.

This impressive wine, with an extraordinarily rich and creamy texture, is undoubtedly the most intense wine produced to date. A splendid expression of Pessac-Léognan with silky tannins, revealing charm, delicacy and power, concentration, depth, considerable richness. Well done!

Saint-Emilion, France This 2003 Grand Cru has a wonderfully complex, austere nose of coffee, smoke, oak and a little graphite. Nice blackcurrant fruit on initial entry with some chocolate. Smooth mouthfeel with drying tannins on the finish.

Pessac-Leognan, France The 2006 Château Pape Clèment has an intense bouquet that is very well defined, adorned with cassis, blueberry and subtle iodine scents that all gain momentum in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very well-judged acidity, the new oak neatly enmeshed and blessed with a precise, harmonious finish that lingers. This is a wonderful Pape Clèment that will give much pleasure over the next 20 or 30 years.

Margaux, France The Pavillon Rouge 2003 is a monumental wine, richer in tannins than any Château Margaux produced over at least the last 40 years, until 2005 (which is even more concentrated!). This unusual power is fortunately balanced, as in the first wine, by a delicacy and smoothness which almost makes one forget the impressive tannic structure. It is delicious to drink today and for many more years to come.

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, France Chateau Canon is a 1er Grand Cru Classé estate in the St Emilion appellation on Bordeaux’s right bank. The Grand Vin Chateau Canon is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. After harvesting the grapes are meticulously sorted before undergoing fermentation and a two week post-ferment maceration to build tannin structure. Maturation takes place in 60% new French oak for 18 to 20 months. In the best years, Chateau Canon is deeply coloured and plush with ample mouth-coating blue and blackberry fruit.

Pessac-Leognan, France The cranberry and cherry notes on the nose are pretty, and this wine also has a firm core of ripe tannins and good concentration with some real sophistication on the finish.

Cote de Nuits The domaine is led by Benoit Stehly, nephew of Georges Lignier, who worked at the domaine for a decade alongside his uncle, before assuming control of the work in both the vineyard and the cellar in 2008. His approach is very traditional, as he seeks to achieve maximum aromatic concentration, above nearly all other characteristics, including structural or color concentration. To achieve this, techniques such as a slightly later harvest and 80% destemming are employed. At the Villages level, the wines are raised in older barrels, while the 1er Crus see 30% new oak, and the Grand Crus 50% new oak. A vein of seductive elegance runs throughout the full range of wines, inviting a complex and beautiful conversation with each glass. The sensitive palate will thoroughly enjoy this approach, a statement of respect for the grandest of traditions in Burgundy and a sublime expression of the terroir underlying some of the most renowned sites in the Cote de Nuits. Since 2010 the wines are neither fined nor filtered.

Cote de Nuits Bright medium red. Quintessential Burgundy aromas and flavors of black raspberry, bitter cherry, Oriental spices, coffee, and musky underbrush, all lifted by an element of peppery herbs. Densely packed, spicy and taut; initially seems a bit light but there's real sap here. The light peppery quality combines with fine tannins to give the finish grip and lift. My recorked bottle held up for days in the refrigerator.

Cote de Nuits, France Located in Burgundy’s Gevrey-Chambertin, the Rossignol-Trapet domaine makes top quality red wine from the Pinot Noir grape variety. The estate was founded when Jacques Rossignol of Volnay married Mado Trapet from Gevrey-Chambertin, with their two sons Nicolas and David Rossignol taking over full winemaking responsibilities from 1990 after the domaine was split into two (the other half becoming Trapet Père et Fils). Rossignol-Trapet makes a small number of bottles every year, following organic and biodynamic methods just like their cousins at Trapet Père et Fils. Yields are reduced as much as possible to focus on quality, not quantity, and new oak is only prominent in the Grand Cru expressions. The wines can be quite austere when young, with earthy and floral notes at the forefront, however, this firmer structural quality only helps to create the perfect framework for the wines to age with grace and elegance.

Cote de Nuits, France begins with really attractive ruby color of medium intensity with real brilliance. Truly charming, slightly vanilla at first, then moving towards aromas of fresh raspberries of great purity, then notes of musk and soft spices. The mouth is sumptuous, possessing an extraordinary velvetiness. The palate is rich in aromas - red fruits, then cinnamon, then butterscotch - almost creme brulee. Almost infinite length.

Cote de Nuits, France The Gevrey Chambertin of the Maison Louis Jadot is a wine vinified from the production of various major producers of Gevrey. It has a very deep ruby color. It gives off aromas of ripe red and black fruits, spices and animal notes of musk and fur as it ages. It is silky, robust, tannic and well balanced.

This 2015 plays the card of gluttony and immediacy. .In short: this estate has always worked organically and voluntarily seeks the somewhat rustic character of Maranges in its bottles. The wines are regulated whatever the vintages and are safe values each year. To recommend to wine lovers a little manly in their youth or to wait in the cellar at least 5 years to make them more friendly.

On the palate, generous for the vintage and starting to soften towards a silkier expression. A very enjoyable Grands Echezeaux in the making.

Vosne Romanee, Burgundy The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Champs Perdrix has an open-knit, slightly mushroomy bouquet of light red fruit, hints of sage and even a little onion skin. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, a touch of white pepper and a cohesive, quite energetic finish. This should age nicely over the next decade.

Cote de Nuits Slightly high-toned aromas of crushed cherry, menthol, flowers and sweet oak. Sappy and savory on the palate, with a restrained sweetness to the dark fruit and licorice flavors and a complicating element of wild potpourri spices. This tactile, masculine Clos-Vougeot shows a lot of medicinal reserve today and should be forgotten for seven or eight years.

Loire Valley, France Very aromatic and round on the palate, this tender rosé wine is a delicacy. The Grolleau Gris is highlighted in this cuvée. A fruity and slightly tart palate contributes to the balance of this wine.

Rhone, France The color is a deep garnet red. The nose of the Haute Pierre has strong spicy aromas that reveal a rich, powerful body that is delicate, yet has a tightly-knit tanninc framework. On the palate, the wine is rich and unctuous, revealing intense licorice-like flavors. It can easily be kept 10 years or more.Pair with the traditional French and 'Provencale' type-stews and meats.

Rhone, France Owner of the Les Bruyères estate located in the heart of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation, winemaker David Reynaud offers a superb cornas here. It's immediately approachable, but it should still age well for at least a decade.

The mouth is remarkable, firmly tannic and provided with a smooth finale. Ideal with game meat.

Coteaux du Languedoc, France This cuvée is a blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Grenache from the terroirs of Saint-Pargoire, a village classified as a Coteaux du Languedoc AOC (then Languedoc AOP). The vines are about 25 years old and the fermentation is traditionally carried out in stainless steel and concrete vats, with a small amount of lightning. The first vintage of Clos des Cistes was 2002. Small yields of just 15 hectolitres per hectare.90% Syrah and 10% Grenache Noir.The ruby colour with garnet highlights reveals complex and pure scents: Mediterranean spices, garrigue, tapenade, prune, dates and smoky/lardy notes. Gualtallary District, Tupungato Alto Region, Uco Valley, Mendoza WINE DESCRIPTION This cuvée takes its name from a small parcel of the Adrianna Vineyard that is completely covered with oval white stones and was the site of an ancient riverbed. The abundant stones provide optimal drainage and extreme temperatures. They absorb heat and moderate the nights, but also function like ice cubes after a very cold night. Stony soil Malbecs tend to be extremely aromatic, rich and luxurious, just like the River Stones Malbec from Adrianna. This wine can be enjoyed young or aged for decades.

Maipo, Chile This wine has a lively violet colour. The nose is very fresh, with lots of red andblack fruit accompanied by notes of tobacco leaf, spices and pepper. Thepalate is medium-bodied and intense with a velvety texture and very softtannins, complemented by ripe black fruit, fresh acidity and a long finish.

The aromas of red fruits delicately intermingle with mineral notes that recall cold ashes and pencil lead. Itata Valley, Chile The Cinsault variety from the beautiful Itata Valley never ceases to amaze us. In this vintage the wine achieved the unmistakable color that this variety tends to present—a very lively ruby red with magenta at the rim. Aromatically it expresses the typical fresh berry notes of blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries as well as notes of wildflowers, country herbs, and damp forest. Its short stay in French oak barrel lends enough complexity on the nose and smoothed the tannins on the palate.

BADIAPASSIGNANO Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG, ItalyBadia a Passignano is one of the last vineyards to mature and one of the first to start, so it always has a very long growing cycle. The spring began with good weather with budbreak coming about ten days early, followed by a cool, early summer and a hot August. The Sangiovese-based 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano shows some real ripeness on the close with more red and purple fruit rather than black fruit characteristics. This is a very traditional expression of the Tuscan grape and the least international of Marchesi Antinori's offerings. It's the kind of classic Sangiovese that belongs on the table next to a pappardelle with your favorite ragù.

PEPPOLI CHIANTI Tuscany, ItalyAn intense ruby red in color, the nose of the wine is characterized by aromas of cherries, with the supplementary notes of violets, characteristic of Sangiovese along with spice and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is savory and balanced with the crisp acidity of this variety and sweet flavors. The tannins are rather supple and the finish and aftertaste show the fruit and spice which develop during the aging period. On the whole, the wine is long and pleasurable.

PIAN DELLE VIGNE Tuscany, Italy100% SangioveseThe 2009 vintage is ruby red in color with garnet highlights. On the nose, it has intense violet floral aromas as well as strong plum and blackberry notes, which are integrated with notes from the oak casks. Light spices and chocolate fuse on the aromatic finish with suggestions of leather, tobacco leaves and balsamic notes.The palate is ample and elegant with silky, yet supple tannins. The finish is lengthy, expressing vibrant acidity and mineral freshness. The wine is enjoyable now, but can also be stored to develop over time.

DE STEFANI 1624 Marzemino 100% ABV 15.5%Stèfen is the ancient surname of the De Stefani family, as written in old documents dated 1624. With this wine De Stefani wanted to bring back the old vinification process of the Marzemino. Here grapes are naturally dried, while the wine continues the fermentation process until all of the sugars are transformed into alcohol. This is a very deep ruby color with a garnished hue. It has a full body that is powerful and bold with a heavy texture but is yet still delicate and maintains a low acidity. Intense scents of ripe wild fruit and clear notes of cherry, blackberry, vanilla, and chocolate prevail throughout the wine. The wine has round tannins and a lingering warm finish.

EALTAREBAROLO Piedmont, ItalyThe Elio Altare Barolo is a blend of Nebbiolo grapes from the La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba and Barolo sub-regions. Only 800-850 dozen bottles are produced each year from vineyards planted on south and south-east facing slopes in the late 1900s. The vineyards, on various soil types, are farmed organically, but along traditional lines.The grapes are crushed and then macerated on skins for 4-5 days in temperature-controlled rotary fermenters before fermentation using indigenous yeasts. The wine is matured for 24 months in French oak barriques before bottling unfined and unfiltered.The Elio Altare Barolo shows an intense ruby-red colour with hints of garnet.On the nose fresh scents of small red fruits, raspberry, redcurrant and wild roses evolve into licorice and spice notes. The palate is typically warm, elegant and persistent, with soft tannins and a long finish.

NIPOZZANO CHIAN Tuscany, ItalyThis firm, rich red shows the freshness with chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Fine tannins. Dried mushroom, walnut and bark undertones to the ripe berries.

GAJABARBARESCO PiedmontFloral aromatics give way to bright spiced red fruits, menthol and licorice as the 2005 Barbaresco opens in the glass. This is a firm, classically built wine of notable elegance. The tannins are substantial yet beautifully woven into the wine’s mid-weight frame. This is another beautiful Barbaresco from Angelo Gaja. . Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. I was blown away by Angelo Gaja’s 2005 wines from Barbaresco. When all is said and done, Gaja may have well produced not the wine, but rather the wines of the vintage in a year that was excellent. They are vibrant offerings that will thrill readers who love Piedmont wines. As always, Gaja blends in a small percentage of Barbera in his single-vineyard wines, but that is hardly noticeable in this vintage. I also noted less new oak than has generally been the case in the recent past. The wines showcase very pure expressions of Nebbiolo and are made in a style that appears to make fewer concessions to the decidedly international approach of previous vintages. In short, these are the most Piedmontese wines I have tasted from Angelo Gaja in a long time. Could it be that the greatest innovator in Piedmont over the last thirty five-plus years has taken a small step towards a more classic style.

GAJA RENNINA BRU D M 100% Sangiovese GrossoThe 2015 vintage, being the showstopper it is, is a beautifully crafted wine experience.The nose showcases aromatic herbs of rosemary and licorice root. Some fruit aromas of pomegranate, blueberry, and orange zest play a secondary role. On the palate this is full, yet light on its feet with fine-grained tannin.

Cru-level Barolo from top makers in a good year are still going to be bankers after a couple of decades.
