Indian Ocean · honest comparison

Maldives vs Mauritius vs Seychelles.

Three of the world's great beach destinations — and three very different holidays. Here's the honest version, from a team that lives and works in the Maldives, to help you pick the right one. (Short answer at the top, the detail below.)

Maldives

Water & seclusion

Overwater villas, private islands, the best house-reef snorkelling on earth, and doing gloriously little. The honeymoon benchmark — and usually the priciest.

Mauritius

Variety & value

One big island with mountains, culture, golf and towns to explore. More to do, easier logistics, better value — a strong family and longer-stay pick.

Seychelles

Nature & island-hopping

Dramatic granite beaches, lush jungle, giant tortoises and hopping between Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. For travellers who want scenery and a little independence.

Maldives vs Mauritius.

This is the comparison most people are really making. The Maldives is an archipelago of more than a thousand tiny coral islands, each luxury resort occupying its own — so you fly in, transfer by seaplane or speedboat, and stay put in a world of overwater villas, calm lagoons and reefs you can snorkel from your steps. There is very little to "do" beyond the water, and that's the point.

Mauritius is a single, large volcanic island. There are beaches and lagoons, but also mountains, waterfalls, botanical gardens, a vivid Creole-Indian-French culture, golf, markets and towns — you hire a car and explore. It's generally better value (ordinary flights, no water transfers, a broader hotel range) and tends to suit families, repeat travellers and anyone who'd feel restless on a single resort island.

Choose the Maldives for the overwater villa, the seclusion and the snorkelling; choose Mauritius for variety, value and a trip with more in it. If the picture in your head is a villa on stilts over turquoise water, only one of them delivers that at scale.

Maldives vs Seychelles.

The Seychelles trades the Maldives' flat coral calm for drama: granite boulders framing the sand, jungle-clad hills, giant tortoises and the famous beaches of La Digue and Praslin. You island-hop by ferry and small plane, and stay in a mix of resorts and self-catering — it rewards a bit of independence and a love of scenery and nature.

The Maldives is quieter, more horizontal and more cocooning: you commit to one island and the sea around it. For underwater life and overwater villas the Maldives wins; for landscapes, walking and variety on land, the Seychelles does.

Frequently asked

The questions people actually ask.

Maldives or Mauritius — which is better?+

It depends on the trip you want. Choose the Maldives if your priority is an overwater villa, total seclusion, a private island and snorkelling straight off your deck — it's the more romantic, more exclusive, do-very-little destination, and the honeymoon benchmark. Choose Mauritius if you want more to do beyond the beach — mountains, towns, culture, golf, day trips — usually at better value, which makes it a strong family and longer-stay choice. In short: Maldives for water and seclusion, Mauritius for variety and value.

Is Mauritius cheaper than the Maldives?+

Generally, yes. Mauritius is a single large island reached by ordinary flights, so there's no seaplane or speedboat transfer cost, a wider range of hotels (including more mid-market and self-catering options), and meals or excursions off-resort are cheaper. The Maldives' one-island-one-resort model, overwater villas and water transfers push the typical spend higher — though Maldives local-island guesthouses can close much of that gap. For a like-for-like luxury overwater stay, the Maldives is usually the pricier of the two.

Maldives vs Seychelles — what's the difference?+

The Seychelles is famous for dramatic granite-boulder beaches, lush jungle, giant tortoises and island-hopping between Mahé, Praslin and La Digue — it rewards travellers who want scenery, nature and a degree of independence (self-catering and guesthouses are common alongside resorts). The Maldives is flatter, quieter and more resort-centred: calm turquoise lagoons, the world's best house-reef snorkelling and overwater villas, but far less to 'do' on land. Seychelles for nature and exploring; Maldives for water, villas and switching off.

Which is best for a honeymoon?+

The Maldives is the classic honeymoon winner — overwater villas with private pools, in-villa dining, sunset dolphin cruises and a one-resort-per-island privacy that's hard to match. Mauritius and the Seychelles make wonderful honeymoons too, especially for couples who want to explore as well as relax, but for the iconic 'just-us-on-the-water' honeymoon, the Maldives is the benchmark.

Which is best for families?+

Mauritius often edges it for families: more to do off the beach, a wider hotel range, easier logistics and better value, plus shallow lagoons and strong kids' clubs. That said, many Maldives resorts are superb for families — kids' clubs, family villas, house-reef snorkelling and dolphin trips — and we match families to the right island. The Seychelles suits more adventurous, nature-loving families who'll enjoy island-hopping.

Can you combine the Maldives with the others?+

Yes — and it's a great trip. A common pairing is a few active days exploring Sri Lanka or Dubai followed by the Maldives to unwind, since both connect easily by air. Mauritius and the Seychelles are further apart logistically, so they're usually done as standalone trips. We build multi-stop itineraries with the Maldives as the relaxation finale.
