Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa, located in the South Ari Atoll, has introduced the Machchafushi Universe, a concept highlighting the island’s interconnected marine and terrestrial ecosystems. This initiative focuses on the biodiversity surrounding the property, ranging from the vibrant coral gardens of the house reef to the diverse birdlife inhabiting the island’s lush canopy. The resort aims to provide guests with an immersive look at this delicate environment, which includes the nearby Kudhi Maa shipwreck and a historic 200-year-old banyan tree.
The surrounding reef serves as a habitat for various marine species, including reef sharks, manta rays, and whale sharks. Beyond the water, the island supports a range of avian life, such as grey herons and roseate terns. Through ongoing reef stewardship and educational programs, the resort emphasizes the importance of preserving these natural habitats while inviting visitors to engage with the island’s living history and environmental rhythms.
