The reef passes that define Maldivian surfing

Most travellers picture the Maldives as flat turquoise — and for eleven months of the year, from a resort deck, it often is. But from March to October, the southwest monsoon (Hulhangu) sends Indian Ocean groundswell into a 900-kilometre chain of coral atolls, and some of the most consistent reef surfing on earth lights up.

The Maldives is not a beach-break destination. Every named wave here is a reef pass — lefts and rights that peel along coral ledges, often over shallow inside sections. Warm water (27–30°C) means board shorts year-round. Crowds are modest by Bali or Portugal standards, but the Malé atolls can get busy on weekends when surf boats run from the capital.

What follows is our atlas of every named surf point we track — 23 breaks across four zones, with the resort or access model that gets you into each lineup. For resort pairings and an interactive map, see our surfing resorts collection and switch on the Surf breaks layer on the Maldives map.

Found by a shipwreck

Nearly every break on this list traces back to one story. In December 1973, Australian Tony "Hussein" Hinde was crewing the ketch Whitewings when it wrecked on a Maldivian reef. Exploring the empty atolls by dhoni, he rounded a headland and found a wrapping six-foot left with no other surfer for a thousand miles. He named it Pasta Point, made the Maldives home, and in 1989 founded Atoll Adventures — the country's first surf operation. He surfed Pasta Point until he passed away in its lineup in 2008.

That origin explains why Maldivian surf culture is reef-first, boat-access, and resort-adjacent — not a scene built around surf towns and rental boards on the sand.

When to go

Peak season for the Malé atolls: March–October. South swells arrive with the monsoon; offshore winds through the wet season groom the reef faces.

Central atolls (Laamu, Thaa, Meemu, Dhaalu): March–November — longer window, fewer day-trip boats, more seaplane + resort boat access.

Southern frontier (Huvadhoo / Gaafu): February–November, biggest June–August. Mostly liveaboard or charter — the trade-off for uncrowded, powerful reefs.

For month-by-month rainfall and wind, cross-reference our Maldives weather by month guide.

How access works

Three models repeat across the archipelago:

1. Resort-exclusive waves — Pasta Point (Cinnamon Dhonveli), Lohis (Hudhuran Fushi), Kandooma Right (Holiday Inn Kandooma). You stay at the resort; the wave is on the house reef or a short dhoni ride. 2. Speedboat day trips from Malé — Sultans, Honkys, Cokes, Chickens, Jailbreaks. Surf charter operators and some North Malé resorts run daily sessions; queues form on the best swell weekends. 3. Remote resort + boat or charter — Yin Yang at Six Senses Laamu, Farms at COMO Maalifushi, Huvadhoo breaks via southern liveaboards.

Booties are worth packing. Every break here is coral.

North Malé Atoll — the classic zone

Kaafu · ~25 minutes by speedboat from Malé · Peak Mar–Oct

This is the densest cluster of world-class passes in the country — and the zone most visitors surf first.

Pasta Point (left · all levels)

The most consistent wave in the Malé atolls, and the only break with exclusive resort access. A long, wrapping left off Kanifinolhu (Cinnamon Dhonveli), capped at roughly 30 surfers. Works on almost any swell; offshore through the southwest monsoon. Shallow coral on the inside — respect the reef on smaller tides.

Cinnamon Dhonveli MaldivesNorth Malé Atoll→

Sultans (right · intermediate)

A world-class right peeling off uninhabited Thanburudhoo — long walls that hold size from 1 ft to 10 ft without closing out. Open access (sanctuary protection applies); popular when swell is up. Pair with a North Malé surf resort or a day boat from Malé.

Honkys (left · all levels)

The fast, hollow mirror of Sultans across the same reef — quick, powerful, especially fun on northeast swell. Weekend crowds from the surf-boat fleet.

Jailbreaks (right · advanced)

A reeling right off Himmafushi — the island that once held the country's prison, hence the name. Long, fast walls on southeast swell; boat access only. Shared by locals and charters; can get busy on peak days.

Cokes (right · advanced)

North Malé's heaviest, most regular barrel — a powerful right off Thulusdhoo, the island with the Maldives' only Coca-Cola bottling plant. Tubes to 8 ft over shallow reef; experienced surfers only.

Chickens (left · intermediate)

A workable left wall off the western tip of Thulusdhoo that can link up to 500 m on the right swell — North Malé's longest ride when it's on.

Lohis (left · all levels)

A forgiving, peeling left wrapping the reef at Lohifushi — today Adaaran Select Hudhuran Fushi. One of the longest, most user-friendly waves in the country; rideable 1–8 ft. Semi-private resort wave.

Adaaran Select Hudhuran FushiNorth Malé Atoll→

Ninjas (left · intermediate)

A mellower secondary left near Hudhuran Fushi — a gentle step down from Lohis when you want a softer session.

South Malé Atoll — less crowded, still fast

Kaafu · short boat from resort islands · Mar–Nov

South Malé picks up the same swells with lighter lineups than the Thanburudhoo cluster.

Quarters (right · intermediate)

Punchy right near Guraidhoo — needs a bigger swell to fire, then throws barrels. Accessed from the Anantara islands.

Anantara Dhigu Maldives ResortSouth Malé Atoll→

Guru's (left · intermediate)

A long, manageable left wall on southerly swells of 1.5 m or more — mellow by Maldivian standards.

Twin Peaks (A-frame · all levels)

Among the most beginner-friendly waves in South Malé — a forgiving peak when you're learning reef take-offs.

Riptides (right · advanced)

A fast right in the channel; on a big south swell with southwest wind, a 150 m wall with hollow sections and a strong end bowl. Mind the channel current.

Kandooma Right (right · intermediate)

Hollow right off the Kandooma reef — semi-private to Holiday Inn Kandooma guests. Easy outside take-off that builds down the line.

Central atolls — barefoot luxury, empty lineups

Thaa · Laamu · Meemu · Dhaalu · Mar–Nov

Seaplane territory. Fewer day boats, more resort dhonis and multi-break sessions from a single base.

Yin Yang (right · advanced)

Regarded as one of the finest waves in the Maldives — long, fast right at Six Senses Laamu with a barrelling outside section and a powerful inside ledge. The resort sits beside five quality breaks in Laamu.

Six Senses LaamuLaamu Atoll→

Refugees (left · intermediate)

Long, workable left in Laamu — far from Malé day-trip crowds.

Malik's / Farms (right · intermediate)

Quiet right-handers in Thaa Atoll, within reach of COMO Maalifushi.

COMO Maalifushi, The MaldivesThaa Atoll→

Vodi (right · intermediate)

Reef break off Dhaalu Atoll, accessed from Niyama Private Islands.

Niyama Private Islands MaldivesDhaalu Atoll→

Mushrooms (left · all levels)

Playful left in Meemu (Mulaku) Atoll — fun across a range of sizes; genuinely uncrowded.

Southern atolls — the charter frontier

Huvadhoo (Gaafu) · Feb–Nov · biggest Jun–Aug

The deep south is liveaboard and charter country — reefs that pick up swell almost year-round, with lineups measured in boats per week, not surfers per peak.

| Break | Type | Level | Character | |-------|------|-------|-----------| | Five Islands | Right | Advanced | Long right; charter access | | Blue Bowls | Right | Advanced | Hollow, shallow, intense | | Tiger Stripes | Left | Advanced | Heavy left over clear reef | | Beleaguered Castle | Left | Advanced | Powerful, punchy | | Antiques | Left | Intermediate | Mellow on smaller days |

If your clients are competent on shallow reef and want the anti-Malé experience, Huvadhoo is the answer — but build in seaplane/domestic connections and a reputable charter operator.

Planning notes for agents

  • Transfers: North Malé surf resorts are speedboat-friendly (15–30 min). Central/southern surf bases need seaplane — factor daylight cutoffs (see our transfers guide).
  • Boards: Most surf resorts and charters rent boards; bring booties and your preferred reef template.
  • Regulation: Thanburudhoo (Sultans/Honkys) is a protected sanctuary — follow operator rules on access and anchoring.
  • Not diving: Surf season (wet monsoon) overlaps with excellent diving — many guests combine morning surf and afternoon channel dives on the same trip.

Frequently asked

Common questions

When is the best time to surf in the Maldives?+

March to October (southwest monsoon / Hulhangu) brings the most consistent Indian Ocean swell to the Malé atolls. Southern atolls like Huvadhoo can fire from February through November, with the biggest swells typically June–August.

What is the most famous surf break in the Maldives?+

Pasta Point at Cinnamon Dhonveli in North Malé Atoll — discovered by Tony Hinde in 1973, capped at around 30 surfers, and the only wave in the country with exclusive resort-guest access.

Can beginners surf in the Maldives?+

Yes, on the right breaks and season. Lohis, Twin Peaks, Ninjas and Guru's are forgiving reef waves. Cokes, Jailbreaks and Yin Yang are advanced — shallow coral and powerful barrels demand experience.

How do you access surf breaks in the Maldives?+

Three models: resort-exclusive waves (Pasta Point, Lohis, Kandooma Right), speedboat day trips from Malé resorts (Sultans, Cokes, Chickens), and liveaboard/charter boats for central and southern atolls (Huvadhoo, Laamu).

Is surfing dangerous in the Maldives?+

Reef breaks over shallow coral are the main hazard — booties help, but experience reading swell and tide matters. Channel currents at breaks like Riptides need respect. Always surf with a local guide or licensed operator on first sessions.
