Six Senses Kanuhura has joined the international COASTS Project to investigate the role of seagrass and mangrove ecosystems in coastal resilience and carbon sequestration. This scientific initiative, supported by Horizon Europe, involves a consortium of partners including the Maldives Space Research Organization and EOMAP. Research activities at the Lhaviyani Atoll property include sediment sampling, ecological surveying, and mapping of seagrass meadows within the resort’s lagoon and reef flat.
Located in the Lhaviyani Atoll, the ultra-luxury resort features a collection of sophisticated villas and overwater bungalows. By hosting these field studies, the property aims to provide essential data on how seagrass habitats protect shorelines and support marine biodiversity. The findings are intended to assist stakeholders in creating evidence-based management strategies for these vital, yet often overlooked, underwater environments. Beyond the technical research, the resort’s sustainability team continues to promote the importance of seagrass conservation through ongoing guest education and advocacy.
