After you land
The last leg: airport to island
Your resort isn't in Malé — it's on its own island, reached by one of three transfers. Which one depends on the atoll, and it's worth knowing before you book a late-night arrival.
Speedboat
For resorts in the Malé atolls (North & South Malé), a 10–45 minute speedboat runs day or night — the simplest transfer.
Seaplane
For more distant atolls (Baa, Ari, Lhaviyani, Raa), a Trans Maldivian or Manta Air seaplane. Scenic, but daylight-only — last departures around 16:00.
Domestic flight
The furthest resorts (Addu, Gaafu, Laamu) pair a short domestic flight to a regional airport with a speedboat hop.
Seaplanes fly in daylight only — if you land late at night, you may overnight near the airport. We time every transfer to your flights. Tell us your routingand we'll handle the logistics.
Frequently asked
Getting there — your questions.
How do you get to the Maldives?
Every international visitor flies into Velana International Airport (MLE), on its own island beside the capital, Malé. There are some direct long-haul flights from Europe, the Gulf and Asia, but most travellers connect through a hub — Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Colombo or Singapore. From MLE you reach your resort island by speedboat, seaplane or a short domestic flight, arranged to meet your arrival.
Are there direct flights to the Maldives?
Yes, from a number of cities — including seasonal and year-round direct services from parts of Europe, the Gulf and Asia. From most of the world, though, the practical route is one stop via a Gulf hub (Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, Etihad via Abu Dhabi) or via Istanbul, Colombo or Singapore. Our city-by-city flight-time guides show the realistic options from each origin.
Which airport do you fly into for the Maldives?
Velana International Airport (airport code MLE), formerly Malé International, on Hulhulé island next to the capital. It is the country's main gateway and the hub for onward speedboat and seaplane transfers. A few regional domestic airports serve the southern atolls, reached by a connecting flight from MLE.
How do you get from the airport to your resort?
Your transfer depends on the resort's atoll. Islands in the Malé atolls use a speedboat (10–45 minutes, available day or night). More distant atolls use a seaplane, which flies in daylight only — so a late-night arrival may mean a night near the airport before flying out the next morning. The furthest resorts combine a domestic flight with a speedboat. We arrange all transfers to line up with your flights.
How long is the flight to the Maldives?
It varies widely by origin: around 1–1.5 hours from Colombo or South India, roughly 4–4.5 hours from the Gulf, about 9–11 hours one-stop from Western Europe, and longer from North America or Australia. See our flight-time guides below for the duration and routings from your city.
