Frequently asked
Choosing your island — your questions.
What is the best island in the Maldives?
There isn't a single best island — and any guide that names one is overselling. The Maldives has more than 160 resort islands across 26 atolls, and the right one depends entirely on your priority: diving, a honeymoon, family time, value or ultra-luxury. The smarter question is "best island for what?". Match the atoll (which sets your transfer and marine life) and the resort (which sets the style and price), and you find your best island.
Which atoll in the Maldives is best?
Again, it depends. The Malé atolls are best for easy access — a quick speedboat from the airport. Ari Atoll is a favourite for diving, whale sharks and four-star all-inclusive value. Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is famous for manta rays at Hanifaru Bay and hosts some superb luxury resorts. The more remote atolls (Noonu, Raa, Laamu) offer seclusion and ultra-luxury but need a seaplane. Your ideal atoll follows from how you want to travel and what you want to see.
How do I choose between resort islands?
Work top-down: first decide your atoll based on transfer type (speedboat vs seaplane) and the marine life or seclusion you want; then choose the resort based on tier, villa type (beach or overwater), board basis and vibe (romantic, family, dive-focused). Because we hold direct contracts with over 160 resorts and know them first-hand, we shortlist the two or three islands that genuinely fit your trip rather than leaving you to guess.
Should I stay on a resort island or a local island?
Most visitors choose a private resort island — one island, one resort, maximum seclusion. Local (inhabited) islands such as Maafushi and Dhigurah offer a more affordable, culturally immersive stay in guesthouses, with day trips to sandbanks and reefs. They follow local customs (modest dress, alcohol only on offshore boats). Combining a few nights on each is also possible, and we're happy to build that.
