Things to do in the Maldives
The Maldives is far more than a beach to lie on. It's one of the planet's great marine playgrounds — and a few experiences here are worth planning the whole trip around. Twelve of the best, and how to build them into your stay.
Twelve experiences worth the trip
01
Snorkel a house reef →
Most resort islands have a coral reef a few fins from the beach — turtles, reef fish and rays without ever boarding a boat. The single best reason to choose your island carefully.
02
Dive the reefs and channels →
World-class diving on outer-reef walls, channels and wrecks, with PADI centres on most islands. Visibility hits 25–30 m in the dry season.
03
Swim with whale sharks →
The gentle giants cruise South Ari Atoll year-round and Hanifaru Bay (Baa) in season — snorkelling alongside one is unforgettable.
04
Manta rays at Hanifaru Bay →
From roughly June to November, dozens of mantas gather to feed in the UNESCO-protected Baa Atoll — one of the planet's great marine spectacles.
05
Sandbank picnic →
A boat drops you on a bare ribbon of white sand in the middle of the ocean — lunch, a swim and photographs with nothing but horizon around you.
06
Sunset dolphin cruise →
A traditional dhoni glides out at dusk as pods of spinner dolphins surface around the bow — a classic, low-key Maldivian evening.
07
Surf the atolls →
Consistent reef breaks around the Malé atolls and further south fire from roughly May to October — boat and resort access to uncrowded waves.
08
The "sea of stars" →
On the right nights, bioluminescent plankton light the shoreline electric blue — most associated with Vaadhoo but possible on many islands seasonally.
09
Spa and wellness →
Overwater treatment rooms, signature therapies and full wellness programmes — many of the world's most lauded resort spas are here.
10
Stay in an overwater villa →
Sleeping above the lagoon with a ladder into the sea is the defining Maldives experience — and worth at least a few nights of any trip.
11
Visit a local island →
Half a day in an inhabited village — Malé, Maafushi or Dhigurah — offers culture, local food and craft beyond the resort bubble.
12
Big-game and night fishing →
Troll for tuna and wahoo by day or hand-line at dusk with a local crew, then grill the catch back on the beach.
Frequently asked
Things to do — your questions.
What is there to do in the Maldives besides relax?
Plenty. The Maldives is one of the world's premier marine destinations: snorkelling and scuba diving lead the list, with manta rays, whale sharks, turtles and reef sharks all readily seen. Beyond the water there are sandbank picnics, sunset dolphin cruises, surfing, world-class spas, local-island culture tours, big-game and night fishing, seaplane scenic flights and the bioluminescent "sea of stars". Most experiences revolve around the ocean, so your choice of island and atoll shapes what's on your doorstep.
Do you need to leave the resort to do activities?
Not necessarily. Many of the best experiences — snorkelling the house reef, spa treatments, water sports, sunset cruises — happen on or beside your own island. Bigger excursions such as whale-shark trips, manta dives, sandbank picnics and local-island visits are run as half-day or full-day outings by the resort's water-sports and dive centre. As a local DMC we match the island to the experiences you most want.
When is the best time for diving and marine life?
The dry season (December to April) brings the calmest seas and best underwater visibility, ideal for general diving and snorkelling. For manta rays and whale sharks in Hanifaru Bay, Baa Atoll, the window is roughly June to November. South Ari Atoll offers whale-shark encounters year-round. See our best-time-to-visit guide for the month-by-month detail.
Are activities suitable for non-swimmers and families?
Yes. Resorts cater to all levels: shallow lagoons and guided "discover snorkelling" sessions for beginners, kids' clubs and family excursions, plus glass-bottom boat trips for those who prefer to stay dry. Dive centres run try-dives and full PADI courses. Tell us your group's comfort level and we'll build an itinerary that fits.
