Hulhumalé Beach
A long artificial beach on the east shore — shallow, calm and swimmable, the best free way to fill a layover.
The island
Hulhumalé is the Maldives' answer to a crowded capital: a large island built on reclaimed land right beside Velana International Airport, planned from scratch with wide streets, apartment blocks and a growing cluster of hotels and guesthouses. For visitors, it has become the obvious place to stay either side of a flight.
The appeal is pure convenience. The airport is about ten minutes away over the link road, so an early departure or a late-night arrival no longer means a sea transfer in the dark. Rooms run from budget guesthouses to mid-range hotels, with cafés, restaurants and shops within walking distance — and, unusually for the capital area, a proper beach.
Hulhumalé Beach is a long, shallow, swimmable stretch on the island's eastern side — not a resort lagoon, but a genuinely pleasant place to spend the hours before a flight. Hulhumalé is joined to the airport island and on to Malé by the Sinamalé Bridge, which makes the whole capital area easy to move around.
What to do
A long artificial beach on the east shore — shallow, calm and swimmable, the best free way to fill a layover.
The closest comfortable beds to the terminal — ideal for an early flight or a late landing without a sea transfer.
Cross the Sinamalé Bridge to the capital for the mosque, markets and old town, then back the same evening.
A walkable spread of local and international cafés and eateries — a relaxed contrast to a resort meal plan.

Location & access
Getting here
Hulhumalé is reached by speedboat or seaplane transfer from Malé. We book the transfer with your stay so the airport connection is seamless.
Getting around
Hulhumalé is laid out on a grid and easy to walk; taxis and buses run to the airport and across the bridge to Malé.
Best time to visit
Year-round — it's a transit and city base rather than a beach holiday, so your flight times matter more than the season. December–April is the driest.
