Home to the Maldivian capital Malé and the country's only international airport at Velana, North Malé Atoll is the gateway most travellers first meet — a ring of roughly fifty reef-fringed islands wrapped around a turquoise lagoon where the archipelago's tourism industry was born in the 1970s. The atoll holds around eight inhabited islands and more than two dozen private resort islands, almost all reachable by a short speedboat transfer of between fifteen minutes and an hour from the terminal, which makes it the practical choice for shorter stays and for guests arriving on late-evening flights. Its reputation, though, is built underwater. Banana Reef, recognised as a dive site in the early 1970s, remains one of the most storied in the Indian Ocean, with caves, overhangs and pillars running along a three-hundred-metre curve of living coral.
HP Reef, a marine protected area, is famous for the soft corals that blanket its channel pinnacles in strong current, while Lankan Manta Point is a dependable cleaning station where mantas queue above the sand between mid-August and November. Nassimo Thila, a protected pinnacle in the south-east of the atoll, draws advanced divers for its dense soft-coral turrets and resident nurse sharks. The resort landscape is equally layered: private-island flagships such as One&Only Reethi Rah, Gili Lankanfushi, Huvafen Fushi and Baros Maldives sit alongside newer additions, giving the atoll one of the widest stylistic ranges in the Maldives — from barefoot wooden overwater suites to full-service, multi-restaurant estates.
Banana Reef, named for the curve of its western edge, was among the first dive sites officially recognised in the Maldives in the early 1970s and has been a protected marine area ever since — its coral-pillared caves still appear on most global top-ten dive lists.
